Canva Image Sizes — Template Dimensions Guide

Every Canva template starts from a fixed canvas size, and matching that size to where the design will be published is what keeps it sharp instead of stretched or cropped. Below are the dimensions Canva uses for its most-used social, video, and document templates, plus a quick-reference table and a way to resize an existing image to any of them.

Canva Presentation Size

A standard Canva presentation is 1920x1080 pixels (16:9) — the same widescreen ratio as a 1080p screen, so slides fill a projector or laptop display with no black bars. This is also the canvas Canva uses for its Video and YouTube Intro templates, which is why a deck exports cleanly to MP4. If you need a square or vertical deck for social, change the canvas before you start; resizing afterward in Canva re-flows every element.

Standard presentation1920 x 1080 px (16:9)
Mobile-first / Story deck1080 x 1920 px (9:16)
Export for videoKeep 1920 x 1080 and export as MP4 — it maps 1:1 to 1080p
FormatsPDF or PNG per slide for print; MP4 or GIF for motion

Resize an image to 1920x1080 → Pick the “Presentation (16:9)” preset in the Canva platform.

Canva Social Media Sizes

Canva ships a ready-made template for every major platform, each pre-set to the dimensions that network displays best. Starting from the matching template means your design exports at the exact size the platform wants — no cropping at upload, no soft upscaling. These are the sizes Canva uses for the most common social templates:

Instagram Post (Square)1080 x 1080
Instagram Story / Reel cover1080 x 1920
Facebook Post940 x 788
Facebook Cover851 x 315
YouTube Thumbnail1280 x 720
YouTube Channel Art2560 x 1440
Pinterest Pin1000 x 1500

Resize an image for a Canva social template → Choose the matching preset in the Canva platform below.

Canva Email Header Size

Canva’s Email Header template is 600 x 200 pixels, because 600px is the content width almost every email builder uses — a header at that size fills the column without being scaled down. The catch is retina screens: an image that is 600px wide and displayed at 600px looks soft on a phone. Design on the 600 x 200 canvas, export at 2x (Canva writes 1200 x 400), then set the image width to 600 in your email builder so it renders at half its pixel size and stays sharp.

Email graphicCanva canvasNotes
Email header (Canva preset)600 x 200Export at 2x → 1200 x 400, display at 600
Mailchimp header (new builder)660 x 220Mailchimp’s content width is 660px; 2x lands inside its published 660–1320 range

Inline content image600 wideHeight to suit; export 2x and set the width attribute for Outlook
Campaign social share card1200 x 6301.91:1 — what gets pulled when someone shares the web archive link

There is no Email Header entry in Canva’s preset list on every plan, so if you can’t find it, use Create a design → Custom size, switch the unit to px and type the numbers above. No email platform publishes a header height apart from Substack — 200px on a 600px width is a conventional masthead proportion, not a rule, so a taller header is fine as long as the width matches the template.

Resize an image to 600px wide → Or see email header sizes by platform and Mailchimp image sizes for the per-builder widths and file caps.

How to resize in Canva

Canva has a built-in Resizetool (labelled “Resize & Magic Switch”) that copies a finished design to a new set of dimensions and re-flows the elements to fit — it’s a Canva Pro feature. To use it:

  1. Open your design and click Resize in the top toolbar.
  2. Pick a preset (Instagram Post, Presentation, YouTube Thumbnail…) or enter a Custom Size in pixels.
  3. Choose Copy & resize to keep the original, or Resize this design to convert it in place.

On the free plan there’s no Resize button, so set the canvas size before you start — begin from the matching template or use Custom Size — because recreating a finished design at a new size is far more work than choosing it upfront. If you only need to resize a single photo or graphic (not a full multi-element design), the resizer below does it in one click, no Pro plan required.

Exporting at the right resolution

If you designed on a canvas set to the right pixel dimensions, export at 1xand the download matches those dimensions exactly. Canva’s “2x” and “3x” options don’t add real detail to a screen-sized design — they just scale the pixels up, which bloats the file without making it sharper. Save the multiplier for cases where you deliberately designed small and need a larger output.

  • PNG for graphics, JPG for photos: PNG keeps text and flat colors sharp and supports transparency (use it for logos); JPG makes photo-heavy designs smaller.
  • Mind upload limits: a YouTube thumbnail must stay under 2MB, so flatten heavy designs to JPG if the PNG export runs large.
  • Print at 300 DPI: for flyers and documents, design in the print size (e.g. A4 at 2480x3508 px) and export as a print-quality PDF so text and images stay crisp on paper.
  • Design for the safe zone: Facebook covers and YouTube channel art crop differently across devices — keep logos and text within the centered safe area before you export.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard Canva image size?

There isn’t one single size — each Canva template has its own. The most common are the Presentation at 1920x1080 (16:9), the Instagram Post at 1080x1080 (1:1), the Instagram Story at 1080x1920 (9:16), and the YouTube Thumbnail at 1280x720. Pick the template that matches where you’ll publish and Canva sets the canvas for you.

What size is a Canva presentation?

A standard Canva presentation is 1920x1080 pixels, a 16:9 widescreen ratio. That matches a 1080p display, so slides fill a projector or laptop screen with no black bars, and the same canvas exports cleanly to MP4 video.

What is the Canva Instagram post size?

Canva’s “Instagram Post” template is 1080x1080 pixels — a 1:1 square. For Stories and Reels covers, use the 1080x1920 (9:16) template instead. Both export at the exact resolution Instagram displays, so there’s no cropping or upscaling at upload.

What size is a Canva Facebook cover?

Canva’s Facebook Cover template is 851x315 pixels. Facebook crops the edges differently on desktop and mobile, so keep your logo, text, and key elements within the centered safe area to avoid them being cut off.

What size is a Canva email header?

Canva’s Email Header template is 600x200 pixels, because 600px is the content width nearly every email builder uses. Design on that canvas and export at 2x (1200x400), then set the image width to 600 in your email builder so it displays at half its pixel size and stays sharp on retina screens. Mailchimp’s new builder is wider at 660px, so start from a 660x220 canvas for a Mailchimp campaign.

How do I set a custom canvas size in Canva?

On the Canva home screen, click Create a design then Custom size, and enter the width and height in pixels (or switch the unit to inches, mm, or cm for print). Set this before you add anything — the canvas size is the foundation the whole design is built on, and changing it later requires the Pro Resize tool.

Can I resize a design in Canva after I’ve made it?

Yes, with the “Resize & Magic Switch” tool — but it’s a Canva Pro feature. It copies your design to new dimensions and re-flows the elements to fit. On the free plan you can’t resize an existing design, so it’s best to choose the correct size before you start. To resize a single image to a Canva dimension, use the resizer above.

What is the best export format for Canva designs?

Use PNG for designs with text, logos, or flat colors — it stays sharp and supports transparency. Use JPG for photo-heavy designs to keep the file small, which matters for size-limited uploads like a YouTube thumbnail (max 2MB). Export PDF for printable documents and MP4 for anything with motion.

Related Platform Guides

A Canva design almost always ends up somewhere else. These guides give the dimensions, crops and upload limits of the design tools and publishing platforms Canva exports into — set your canvas from the destination’s spec and nothing gets resized twice.
