Notion Image Sizes: Cover, Icon, and Embed Dimensions (2026)

A cover is a horizontal slice, not a picture frame. Notion stretches it to the full width of the window and shows a fixed-height band of it, so the wider the browser, the less of your image’s height survives. That is why the published guidance is a width floor with no height: the height you choose only decides how much of the image Notion has to choose from. Hover the cover and hit Reposition to drag the band up or down and lock in the slice you want.

• Put the subject in the middle third. The top and bottom of a 2.5:1 cover are the first things a narrow band drops, and you can’t control which band a reader’s window produces.
• Leave the bottom-left corner empty. If the page has an icon as well as a cover, the icon overlaps the cover’s lower-left edge. A logo parked there gets covered by an emoji.
• Go to 2400 x 960 for a wide monitor. Same 2.5:1 shape, more pixels. A 1500-wide file spread across a 2560-wide display is being upscaled, and flat colour survives that better than photography or fine type does.
• Text on a cover is a gamble. The band crops unpredictably and the page title is drawn below it anyway. Texture, gradient, and photography hold up; a headline set into the cover rarely does.
• Full width doesn’t change the cover. Toggling Full width in the ••• menu widens the content column, not the cover — the cover already spans the window on every page.

Notion page icon size

280 x 280 is the one pixel dimension Notion states outright, and it is generous on purpose: the icon is drawn small at the top of the page and smaller still everywhere the page is referenced — the sidebar tree, search results, inline @-mentions, gallery cards, breadcrumbs. The upload is sized for the largest of those, so design for the smallest.

• One shape, one colour, no words. At sidebar size an icon is a few millimetres wide. A wordmark reads as a grey smudge; a single silhouette still reads.
• Upload square or it looks wrong. Notion doesn’t crop a non-square icon to a circle — it fits what you give it, so a landscape file lands as a short, off-centre strip beside the title.
• PNG with transparency beats a white square. Notion pages have a light background in light mode and a dark one in dark mode; a baked-in white background turns your icon into a visible tile in dark mode.
• Custom emoji follow the same 280 x 280. They work as page icons, reactions, and inline text — but Notion notes custom emojis won’t render in mobile widgets, so don’t build a system that depends on them there.
• Icons are a navigation aid. A distinct icon per top-level page does more for scanning a long sidebar than any amount of naming discipline.

Notion database cover images (gallery cards)

A database has no cover format of its own. Every card in a gallery is a page, and its preview is that page’s cover — which means one file has to work twice: as a wide band at the top of the open page, and as a near-square tile in the grid. Those two crops fight each other, and which one wins is the Fit image toggle.

• Fit image off is the good-looking default — if you centred the subject. The card fills its frame by cropping your 2.5:1 cover to roughly the middle, so anything you pushed to the left or right edge is gone in the gallery.
• Fit image on letterboxes instead of cropping. The whole 2.5:1 image sits inside the card with empty space above and below. Right for product shots and logos where losing an edge is worse than losing scale.
• Reposition works per card. Hover a card image and choose Reposition to pick the visible slice for that one entry without touching the underlying cover.
• Or skip covers entirely and use a Files & media property. Point the preview at that property and you can upload a purpose-built square per row, leaving the page cover free to be a wide band.
• Page content preview is the trap. It shows the first block of the page — so a card silently changes appearance the moment someone types a paragraph above the image.

Inline image embeds and file limits

Notion publishes no dimension for an image inside a page — an image block is as wide as you drag it, up to the width of the content column. What it does publish is a ceiling, and it’s the one that bites: images must be under 5MB to display, and that applies on paid plans too. The 5GB figure people quote is the upload limit for files, not the limit for something rendering as a picture on the page.

• 1500 px wide is the safe floor. It clears the width Notion asks of covers, so a full-width image block stays sharp on a retina screen without you measuring the column.
• “Too large to be displayed” has an official workaround. Notion’s own advice is to upload the image as a file instead — you get a download link rather than a preview, which is fine for a source asset and useless for a screenshot people need to read.
• Screenshots are the usual 5MB offender. A full-screen retina PNG can clear 5MB on its own. Export it as JPG, or resize before uploading rather than after the error.
• SVG is supported — use it for diagrams. Vector stays crisp at any block width and weighs almost nothing against the 5MB cap.
• Turn on Full width for wide images. The ••• menu’s Full width toggle widens the content column, which is what actually lets a wide screenshot render bigger than the default centred measure.
• Alignment controls disappear at maximum width. Notion hides them when the block is already the same width as the page content — that’s expected, not a bug.

Workspace logo, favicon and share preview

Notion states no dimension for the workspace icon, so the sensible answer is the one figure it does publish for square art: 280 x 280. It renders tiny — a rounded square in the sidebar and the workspace switcher, next to the workspace name — so it is a mark, not a logo lockup. If your brand is a wordmark, upload the monogram.

• Publish a page as a Notion Site and two more images appear. Under Share → Publish → Site customization you can set a favicon (your page icon, or an upload) and a share preview.
• The share preview defaults to your cover. Notion builds it from the site’s current cover image and title, so a 2.5:1 cover gets re-cropped by whichever platform shows the link. Upload a dedicated 1200 x 630 image if the link matters — that is the shape Slack, LinkedIn, and X actually render.
• Custom favicons don’t work in Safari. Notion states this outright, so don’t debug it — Safari visitors see the default.
• Test the favicon at 16 px. A favicon is smaller than any other asset here. If the mark isn’t legible as a 16-pixel square, simplify it before uploading rather than after.
