Twitch recommends 1920 x 1080 pixels because that is the resolution of a standard 1080p broadcast — the offline banner takes over the exact rectangle your live stream occupies. That has one useful consequence: nothing gets cropped. A 16:9 file dropped into a 16:9 player keeps every pixel, which is the opposite of the profile banner, where Twitch trims the edges on narrow windows.

Because the player scales your file to whatever size it is being rendered at, exporting bigger buys you nothing. A 2560 x 1440 or 4K version of the same artwork looks identical in the player and just eats into the 10MB cap. Go the other way and it shows: a 1280 x 720 upload gets scaled up on a desktop player and soft edges are obvious against the crisp UI around them.

• Your overlay canvas is the same 1920 x 1080. If you already have a stream overlay, its background layer is an offline banner with the widgets switched off — a five-minute re-export rather than a new design.
• Design it as a title card, not wallpaper. Someone landing here already clicked your channel. A schedule, a “back at 7pm ET” line, and where else to find you do more than a decorative render.

Nothing is cropped, but plenty is covered. Twitch draws its own chrome over the player: the channel name and an offline indicator sit in the bottom-left, and the playback control bar slides in across the bottom whenever a visitor moves their cursor over the player. Keep your text inside a centred 1728 x 864 box — a 10% inset on every side — and nothing important ends up underneath it.

The second constraint is scale. On a phone the player is roughly 400 pixels wide — about a fifth of your canvas — so 60px type in a 1920 x 1080 file renders at around 12px on screen, which is already at the edge of readable. Treat 60px as your floor and put your headline nearer 120px. Anything you would set at 24px in a design tool is decoration, not information.

• Anchor to the middle, not the corners. Centre-weighted layouts survive every render size; a schedule tucked into a corner is the first thing chrome eats.
• Don’t repeat your channel name in the bottom-left. Twitch already prints it there, and two versions of the same name a few pixels apart looks like a bug.
• Links have to be read, not clicked. Nothing on the offline banner is clickable — a visitor has to type what they see, so short handles beat full URLs, and clickable versions belong in your info panels.
• Check it at 25%. Zoom your design to a quarter size before exporting. If the schedule is unreadable there, it is unreadable on a phone.

For a still image that cap is generous — a flat-colour 1920 x 1080 PNG usually lands well under 1MB, and a photographic background saved as JPEG at quality 80 rarely passes 500KB. If a still export is anywhere near 10MB, something in your pipeline is exporting uncompressed.

Animated offline screens are where the cap actually bites. GIF stores every frame as its own image, so a full 1920 x 1080 animation blows past 10MB in about two seconds of motion. The loops that fit are short — a couple of seconds at 10–12 frames per second — with motion confined to one region of the frame so the rest compresses away. GIF is also limited to 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients band badly; flat colour and hard-edged artwork animate far better than a photographic scene.

• Rejected upload? Re-encode, don’t resize. 1920 x 1080 is the right size — dropping to 1280 x 720 to squeeze under 10MB trades sharpness for a problem that a JPEG export solves outright.
• Export once, reuse everywhere. 1920 x 1080 is also your OBS canvas and a standard 16:9 post image, so one file covers the offline screen and a “we’re live soon” graphic elsewhere.

How to upload your Twitch offline banner

The offline banner lives with the rest of your channel branding, not in the stream settings where most people look for it first.

1. Open your Creator Dashboard and go to Settings → Channel.
2. Select the Brand tab.

4. Set your profile picture, profile banner and brand accent colour while you are on the same tab — they are the pieces a visitor sees around the player.
