Ghost Image Sizes: Feature, Cover, and Social Card Dimensions (2026)
Export feature images at 1200 x 675, the publication cover at 1500 x 500, and social cards at 1200 x 630. Ghost publishes a figure for only three assets on this page — the cover’s width floor, the newsletter header, and the icon — but its source code pins down the rest: uploads are resized to a maximum of 2000px wide, and the social card Ghost emits is capped at 1200px wide. The table below marks which numbers are Ghost’s and which follow from them.
Ghost image dimensions at a glance
| Asset | Upload at | Ratio | Published by Ghost? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post feature image | 1200 x 675 | 16:9 | No dimension — the theme decides the crop |
| Feature image (large source) | 2000 x 1125 | 16:9 | Ceiling only — uploads resize to 2000px wide |
| Publication cover | 1500 x 500 | 3:1 | Width only — “a minimum width of 1500px” |
| Author profile picture | 400 x 400 | 1:1 | No — Gravatar fills in if you skip it |
| Social sharing card (og / X) | 1200 x 630 | 1.91:1 | Width only — Ghost serves social images at 1200px |
| Newsletter header image | 1200 x 600 | 2:1 | Yes — “a 1200x600 .PNG with a transparent background” |
| Publication logo | 600 x 72 | Wide | Yes — “at least 600px x 72px”, transparent |
| Publication icon (favicon) | 256 x 256 | 1:1 | Yes — square, 60px–1,000px, under 100kb |
| Max upload size | 5MB Starter → 1GB Custom | — | Yes — set by your Ghost(Pro) plan |
Ghost states no feature image dimension because Ghost never crops one: on the post page the image is drawn at its own ratio, full width. The crop happens in the feed, and it is the theme that decides it. Source, Ghost’s default theme, cuts post cards to 16:9 in the grid layout and to 1.618:1 in the list layout — so a 16:9 upload is the one that survives a grid feed untouched and only loses its sides in a list.
Ghost post feature image size
Feature image spec
| Design at | 1200 x 675 (16:9) |
| Large source | 2000 x 1125 — the widest file Ghost stores |
| Published by Ghost | No dimension at all |
| Generated sizes | Whatever the theme declares — Source makes 160, 320, 600, 960, 1200 and 2000px wide |
| Cropped? | Not on the post page. Yes in the feed, by the theme |
| Formats | JPG or PNG — Ghost also serves WebP versions to browsers that take them |
There is no official Ghost feature image size, and that is not an oversight. Ghost stores the file you give it and hands the theme a set of widths; the theme picks the shape. What Ghost does fix is the ceiling — every uploadable image is resized down to a maximum width of 2000pxon the way in. Upload a 4000-pixel-wide export and you have not gained a pixel, you have only spent your plan’s file allowance on something Ghost throws away.
- 1200 x 675 is the shape that fits the feed. Source crops grid cards to exactly 16:9, so a 16:9 file lands in the feed with nothing cut off. Cards in the list layout are 1.618:1 and take a slice off the sides — the subject stays put either way.
- The post page never crops. Source renders the feature image at 100% width with no fixed ratio, so a tall image simply pushes the article text down the page. If a post looks like it has an enormous header, the image is portrait, not broken.
- 1200 wide is enough for the article itself. Source tells the browser the feature image is never rendered wider than 1120 CSS pixels. Go to 2000 x 1125 only if you care about retina screens rendering it at full bleed.
- Ghost builds the responsive set for you. Once the file is uploaded it is regenerated at every width the theme declares, and served with a srcset. You are choosing a source file, not a display size.
- Keep text out of the outer 15%. A headline baked into the image is safe at 16:9 and trimmed at 1.618:1, in the 3:2 highlight header, and in the 1:1 thumbnail of a featured list. Put the words in the post title, where the theme can typeset them.
- The feature image is your social card by default. With no card image set, Ghost hands the feature image to Facebook, LinkedIn and X — see the social card section below for what that costs you.

Ghost publication cover image size
Publication cover spec
| Design at | 1500 x 500 (3:1) |
| Published minimum | “A minimum width of 1500px” — no height stated |
| Set it in | Settings → Design & branding → Brand → Publication cover |
| Used for | The homepage header in themes that support it — and as the last-resort social card |
| Cropped? | Yes — drawn as a full-bleed background that fills the header box |
| Keep clear | The middle — the site title and signup form sit on top of it |
The cover is the one Ghost puts a number on: use a minimum width of 1500px so it holds up on most devices. No height is given, because the cover is a background rather than a picture — themes stretch it to fill the header and crop whatever does not fit. 1500 x 500 meets the floor at a wide 3:1 band that reads as a header on a laptop and still has height to give away on a phone.
- It is a backdrop, not a banner. The site title, description and signup form are drawn over the cover in white. Busy photography and light areas eat the type; a dark image, a gradient or a texture keeps it readable.
- Some themes ignore it entirely. The cover is optional and only used where the theme calls for it. In Source it is the homepage background, and it can be switched off in Design settings without deleting the image.
- It is also your fallback social card. When a post has no card image and no feature image, Ghost falls back to the publication cover for og:image — so a 3:1 cover gets centre-cropped to 1.91:1 by Facebook and LinkedIn, losing the top and bottom.
- Don’t confuse it with the logo. The cover is the big header image; the publication logo is the small mark in the navigation bar. Uploading a logo as a cover produces a stretched, pixelated header.
- 2000px wide is the practical maximum. Ghost resizes uploads past 2000px wide, so a 3000px cover ends up 2000px anyway. Design at 1500 x 500 or 2000 x 667 and skip the round trip.

Publication icon and logo
Icon and logo spec
| Publication icon | 256 x 256 (1:1) |
| Icon upload rule | “A square .ico or .png file between 60px – 1,000px, under 100kb” |
| Icon is served at | 256 x 256 as your favicon — .ico files are served untouched |
| Publication logo | 600 x 72 minimum |
| Logo guidance | “Transparent backgrounds and at least 600px x 72px in size” |
| Both live in | Settings → Design & branding → Brand |
The icon is the strictest upload in Ghost: square, 60 to 1,000 pixels, PNG or ICO, and under 100kb — Ghost rejects anything else outright. 256 x 256 is the size to aim at, because that is exactly what Ghost resizes a PNG icon to when it serves your favicon. The logo is the opposite shape and the opposite problem: it sits in the navigation bar, so it needs to be wide, transparent, and legible at a couple of centimetres.
- Under 100kb is the constraint people trip on. A 1000 x 1000 photographic icon will not fit in 100kb. Flat colour and a single shape will, comfortably, at 256 x 256.
- Use PNG, not ICO, unless you need a legacy favicon. Ghost resizes a PNG to 256 x 256 for you; an .ico is served exactly as uploaded, at whatever size it happens to contain.
- The icon is more than a favicon. It appears in the browser tab, in the Ghost admin corner, and as the mark on your signup forms — a wordmark squeezed into a square reads as a grey blur in all three.
- 600 x 72 is a floor, not a target. Upload the logo at 2x — 1200 x 144 in the same proportion — and it stays sharp on retina screens. Height is what themes constrain, so the width follows from your artwork.
- Ghost only reports logo dimensions in structured data up to 600 x 60. A taller logo still displays fine, it just doesn’t carry size information into the publisher markup — one more reason to keep the lockup shallow.
- Transparent PNG both times. The logo sits on your theme’s header colour and the icon on a browser tab; a white box behind either shows up the moment the background isn’t white.
Design a Ghost feature image in Canva
Ghost has no image editor, so feature images and covers get made elsewhere. There is no Ghost preset in Canva — start from Custom size at 1200 x 675 for a feature image, 1500 x 500 for the publication cover and 1200 x 600 for a newsletter header. Export PNG for flat colour, type and anything transparent; JPG for photography. Build one feature image template and duplicate it per post — a recognisable feed beats a different treatment every week.

How to add a Ghost feature image at the right size
- Drop your image into the resizer above, choose Ghost, then Post Feature Image (1200 x 675).
- Drag inside the frame to centre the subject — the feed crops the sides, not the middle.
- Download. JPG for photography, PNG for flat colour or type; either lands far under even the 5MB Starter plan limit.
- In the Ghost editor, click Add feature image at the top of the post and upload the file.
- Open the post settings sidebar, expand Meta data, and check the X and Facebook card previews. If the crop cuts anything that matters, upload a dedicated 1200 x 630 card image there.
- Publish, then view the post on a phone and on the homepage — the article shows the image uncropped, the feed shows the theme’s crop of it.
- Set the publication cover, logo and icon once under Settings → Design & branding → Brand. Those three apply to the whole site and rarely change again.
Feature image vs publication cover vs social card
Three uploads that people mix up constantly — because with nothing set, Ghost quietly substitutes one for another.
| Feature image | Publication cover | Social card | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload at | 1200 x 675 | 1500 x 500 | 1200 x 630 |
| Set per | Post or page | Whole site | Post, and site-wide default |
| Ghost’s own figure | None | Width floor of 1500px | Served at 1200px wide |
| Where it shows | Top of the post, feed cards, email | Homepage header, if the theme uses it | Only in link previews |
| If you skip it | Cards render text-only | Theme falls back to a plain header | Feature image, then the cover, is used instead |
Frequently Asked Questions
What size should a Ghost feature image be?
Use 1200x675 pixels (16:9). Ghost publishes no feature image dimension because it never crops one on the post page — the image is drawn full width at its own ratio. The crop happens in the feed, where the theme decides: Source, Ghost’s default theme, cuts grid cards to exactly 16:9 and list cards to 1.618:1, so a 16:9 upload survives the grid untouched and only loses its sides in a list. For retina screens, 2000x1125 is the same shape at the largest width Ghost will store.
What is the maximum image size Ghost will store?
2000 pixels wide. Ghost resizes every image it can transform down to a maximum width of 2000px as it is uploaded, so a 4000-pixel export gains you nothing. File size is capped separately by your Ghost(Pro) plan: 5MB on the free trial and Starter, 100MB on Publisher, 250MB on Business and 1GB on Custom plans.
What size is a Ghost publication cover image?
Design it at 1500x500 (3:1). Ghost states only a width — covers should have “a minimum width of 1500px” so they look good on most devices — and gives no height, because themes draw the cover as a full-bleed header background and crop whatever doesn’t fit. Keep the middle clear: the site title, description and signup form sit on top of it.
What size should a Ghost social sharing card be?
1200x630 pixels (1.91:1). Ghost serves social images at 1200px wide — anything wider is scaled down before the og:image tag is written — so 1200x630 is the size where what you upload is what the platform downloads. Set it per post under Post settings → Meta data, in both the X card and Facebook card fields, or site-wide under Settings → Meta data.
Why is the wrong image showing when I share a Ghost post?
Because of Ghost’s fallback chain. For a post, Ghost uses the card image set in that post’s meta data; failing that the feature image; failing that the site-wide card image; and failing that the publication cover. So a post with no images at all shares your homepage cover, cropped to 1.91:1. Set a 1200x630 card image on the post, then re-scrape the URL with Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector to clear the cached version.
What size should a Ghost author profile picture be?
400x400 pixels, square. Ghost publishes no dimension, but the largest size the default theme requests is 320px wide on the author archive page (160px in a post byline), so 400x400 covers it with retina headroom. Themes mask the image into a circle and fill the frame, so crop to 1:1 first. If you upload nothing, Ghost uses the Gravatar attached to your account email address.
What size is a Ghost newsletter header image?
1200x600. This is Ghost’s own recommendation, and it is specific: “We recommend using a 1200x600 .PNG with a transparent background for the best results on any background color.” The transparency matters because the header sits on your newsletter’s background colour. Set it under Settings → Newsletters, editing each newsletter individually — header images are not shared between them.
What size is a Ghost publication icon and logo?
The icon must be “a square .ico or .png file between 60px – 1,000px, under 100kb” — Ghost rejects anything else. Upload 256x256, since that is the size Ghost resizes a PNG icon to when serving your favicon. The publication logo is a different shape entirely: Ghost asks for a transparent background and “at least 600px x 72px”. Export it at 2x (1200x144) for retina screens. Both are set under Settings → Design & branding → Brand.
