Discord uses a different set of image dimensions for every part of the app — server branding, profiles, emoji, and stickers all have their own size limits, file-format rules, and boost-level requirements. Uploading at the right size keeps icons crisp in their circular crops, stops banners from stretching, and avoids the “file too large” rejection on emoji and stickers.

Discord Emote Size
Discord emotes — the custom emoji you upload to a server — are 128x128 pixels, square, and capped at 256KB. One size covers static and animated emotes alike. Discord downscales anything larger, but it rejects anything over the file cap outright, so 256KB is the limit that actually bites. In chat the emote renders at roughly 32x32 — the 128x128 upload exists to keep it sharp in the picker and on high-DPI screens, not because anyone sees it that big.
Upload size
128 × 128 px
Aspect ratio

Max file size
256KB
Static and animated emotes share the same dimensions and the same 256KB cap. Animated emotes must be GIF.
| Recommended upload | 128 x 128 px (1:1) |
| Display size in chat | ~32 x 32 px (larger in emoji-only messages and the picker) |
| Max file size | 256KB (static and animated) |
| Supported formats | PNG, JPG, WebP for static; GIF for animated |
| Slot limits by boost level |
|
- Design for 32px, export at 128. Bold silhouettes and high contrast survive the downscale; hairline outlines and small text do not.
- Bigger sources are downscaled, not rejected — but the re-encode is softer. Upload at exactly 128x128 for the sharpest result.
- Transparent PNG keeps the emote clean on both light and dark themes. A white square background looks like a sticker patch in dark mode.
Animated Discord Emote Limits
Animated emotes get no extra room: same 128x128, same 256KB ceiling, and they must be GIF. That cap is the hard part — a few seconds of full-color animation blows past 256KB quickly. Cut frames and shrink the color palette rather than the dimensions, because 128x128 is already the largest Discord will store.
| Dimensions | 128 x 128 px (1:1) — identical to a static emote |
| Max file size | 256KB |
| Format | GIF only — APNG and animated WebP are rejected for emotes |
| Slots | Counted separately from static emotes — 50 of each with no boost, 250 of each at Boost Level 3 |
| Who can use them | Any member, inside the server the emote lives in; Nitro members can use it in other servers too |
Is a Discord emote 112x112?No — that figure is Twitch’s largest emote export, and it gets attached to Discord constantly. Twitch wants three separate squares per emote (112x112, 56x56 and 28x28); Discord wants one 128x128 file. If you’re porting a Twitch set across, re-export at 128x128 rather than uploading the 112 file and letting Discord upscale it. The Twitch emote sizes guide has the full three-size export list.
Drawing the emote from scratch? Start the canvas at 128x128 — Canva accepts it as a custom size — and export as PNG with a transparent background, or GIF if it moves.

Discord Profile Picture Size (PFP)
Discord’s minimum profile picture upload is 128x128 pixels, but the modern recommendation is 512x512 — higher-DPI displays render the avatar above 128px on the profile card. Like the server icon, your PFP is cropped to a circle, so keep faces and logos centered.
Recommended upload
512 × 512 px
Aspect ratio
1:1
Max file size
10MB
128 × 128 is the minimum Discord accepts. The avatar is cropped to a circle on every surface, and an animated PFP requires Nitro.
| Minimum upload | 128 x 128 px (1:1) |
| Recommended upload | 512 x 512 px (or larger — CDN serves up to 4096x4096) |
| Display shape | Cropped to a circle in every surface |
| Supported formats | JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF; GIF for animated avatars |
| Max file size | 10MB |
| Animated PFP | Requires Discord Nitro — free accounts get static only |
- Circular safe zone for the PFP. Keep faces and logos within the inscribed circle (~80% of the square). Anything in the corners is invisible.
- Upload bigger than 128. 512x512 is the practical floor today — modern surfaces (profile card, voice tiles) render the avatar well above 128px.
- Want it to move? Animated avatars are a Nitro feature with their own rules — see Discord Nitro animated avatar below.
Resize an image to 128x128 → Pick the “Profile Avatar” preset in the Discord platform. For the recommended 512x512 export, the “Server Icon” preset is the same square.
Discord Server Icon Size
The Discord server icon is uploaded at 512x512 pixels and displayed as a circle in the server list, server header, and across the Discord mobile and desktop apps. Anything outside the inscribed circle is hidden — design inside a safe zone, not corner-to-corner.
Upload size
512 × 512 px
Aspect ratio
1:1
Max file size
8MB (GIF)
Cropped to a circle and rendered at about 48px in the server sidebar. An animated GIF icon requires Boost Level 1.
| Recommended upload | 512 x 512 px (1:1) |
| Display shape | Cropped to a circle (~80% of the square is visible) |
| Formats | PNG or JPG for static; GIF for animated (Boost Level 1+ required) |
| Animated GIF size | Keep under 8MB; loop seamlessly at 512x512 |
| Safe zone for logos | Keep content inside the inscribed circle — a ~10% padded square (~410x410) is a safe target |
- Design for the circle. Discord crops to a circle on every surface — a rectangular wordmark with text at the edges will get sliced off. Center your mark.
- Read at sidebar size. The server icon is rendered at ~48px in the left rail. Test your artwork at small sizes before uploading — fine detail disappears.
- Animated icons need Boost Level 1. Static PNG/JPG works at any boost level.

Discord Nitro Animated Avatar
An animated avatar is a GIF uploaded to the same avatar slot as a static PFP — same 128x128 minimum, same 512x512 recommendation, same circular crop. The only difference is the paywall: animated avatars require a paid Discord Nitro subscription. Free accounts can upload the GIF, but Discord will store it as a still image.
Upload size
512 × 512 px
Format
GIF
Max file size
10MB
Requires Discord Nitro. 128 × 128 is still the floor, and the GIF is cropped to a circle exactly like a static avatar.
| Dimensions | 128 x 128 px minimum · 512 x 512 px recommended (1:1) |
| Format | GIF — the only animated format the avatar slot accepts |
| Max file size | 10MB, same as a static avatar |
| Requirement | Paid Discord Nitro subscription |
| Also unlocked by Nitro | The animated 600x240 profile banner, and a separate avatar per server |
- The first frame has to stand alone. It’s what shows anywhere animation is paused, so don’t start the loop on a blank or mid-transition frame.
- Animate inside the circle. Movement that swings into the corners gets clipped — the circular mask applies to every frame.
- Keep the loop short. The avatar renders around 40px in the member list; long, detailed animation reads as noise at that size and inflates the file for nothing.
- Cancelling Nitro reverts you to a static avatar. Keep a still version of the artwork ready so you’re not stuck with a random frame.
Size a still frame to 128x128 → The resizer exports stills — use it to check the crop and the first frame, then upload the GIF itself to Discord.
Discord Sticker Size
Stickers are Discord’s bigger, higher-fidelity cousin to the custom emote. They’re uploaded at 320x320 pixels, capped at 512KB, and use a different format set — PNG, APNG (animated PNG), or Lottie (vector JSON). Note that stickers do not accept standard GIF; animated stickers must be APNG or Lottie.
Upload size
320 × 320 px
Aspect ratio
1:1
Max file size
512KB
PNG, APNG or Lottie .json — not GIF. Servers start with 5 sticker slots and unlock more at each boost level.
| Dimensions | 320 x 320 px (1:1) |
| Max file size | 512KB |
| Supported formats | PNG (static), APNG (animated), Lottie .json (vector) |
| Lottie requirements | 100% vector (no embedded raster), transparent background, ≤ 60 FPS |
| Slot limits by boost level |
|
- Stickers vs emoji: stickers display much larger in chat (closer to a small image), take up their own message, and don’t mix inline with text. Emoji are small inline marks for reactions and short replies.
- Converting an animated GIF to a sticker? You’ll need to convert it to APNG first — Discord rejects GIF on sticker uploads.
- Lottie stickers stay crisp at any size because they’re vector, and have tiny file sizes — great for simple shapes and text-based animations.
Resize an image to 320x320 → Pick the “Sticker” preset in the Discord platform.
Discord Invite Splash Size
The invite splash is the background image behind the “You’ve been invited to join” card. It’s 1920x1080 pixels at 16:9 and unlocks at Boost Level 1— one level earlier than the server banner. It’s the only piece of server art most people see before they join, so it does the work of a landing page.
Upload size
1920 × 1080 px
Aspect ratio
16:9
Requirement
Boost Level 1
Static PNG or JPG only — the invite splash cannot be animated. The invite card sits opaque in the center of the frame.
| Recommended upload | 1920 x 1080 px (16:9) |
| Requirement | Boost Level 1 |
| Formats | PNG or JPG — static only, no animation |
| Where it shows | Behind the invite card on the join screen, for people who haven’t joined yet |
| Safe zone | The invite card is centered and opaque — push key artwork outward from the middle of the frame |
- Don’t center your logo. The invite card covers the middle of the image. Anything you want read has to live around it.
- Keep it atmospheric. Small text is unreadable behind a card on a phone-sized join screen — pick a mood shot or a pattern over a dense info graphic.
- One export can serve both slots. A single 1920x1080 file works as the splash at full size and as the server banner downscaled, since both are 16:9.
Resize an image to 1920x1080 → Pick the “Invite Splash” preset in the Discord platform.
Discord Image Optimization Tips
- Design icons for a circle: server icons and avatars are cropped to circles — keep logos and faces centered, away from the corners.
- Server banner needs Boost Level 2: the server banner requires the server to reach Boost Level 2, and the recommended upload is 960x540 or larger at 16:9.
- Keep emoji bold and simple: custom emoji display at roughly 32px in chat, so upload a clean 128x128 image with strong shapes that read at small sizes.
- Mind the file size limits: emoji must stay under 256KB and stickers under 512KB — compress before uploading to avoid rejection.
- Animated formats vary by asset: emoji use GIF only, stickers use APNG or Lottie (not GIF), and server icons / avatars / banners use GIF for animation. Nitro is required for animated personal avatars and banners.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big are Discord emotes?
Discord emotes — custom server emoji — are 128x128 pixels and must be under 256KB. Static and animated emotes use the same dimensions and the same file cap; animated ones must be GIF, since APNG and animated WebP are rejected. They display at roughly 32x32 pixels in chat, so use bold shapes and high contrast. Note that 112x112 is the Twitch emote size, not Discord’s — re-export Twitch artwork at 128x128 before uploading it here.
What size is a Discord PFP?
A Discord PFP needs a minimum of 128x128 pixels, but the practical recommendation in 2026 is 512x512 so it stays sharp on high-DPI displays. The avatar is cropped to a circle on every surface, so keep your face or logo centered, and the file has to stay under 10MB. Animated PFPs require Discord Nitro.
What is the Discord server icon size?
A Discord server icon should be 512x512 pixels. It is cropped to a circle and rendered at about 48px in the server sidebar, so design for the circular crop and use a simple, centered mark. Animated GIF server icons require the server to reach Boost Level 1.
What size is a Discord banner?
It depends which banner you mean. Your personal profile banner is 600x240 pixels (5:2) and requires Nitro. A server banner, shown above the channel list, is 960x540 pixels (16:9) and requires Boost Level 2. The invite splash behind the join card is 1920x1080 pixels (16:9) and requires Boost Level 1.
What size is a Discord Nitro animated avatar?
An animated avatar uses the same spec as a static one — 128x128 pixels minimum, 512x512 recommended, under 10MB, cropped to a circle — but the file has to be a GIF and the account needs a paid Discord Nitro subscription. Make the first frame work on its own, because that is what shows wherever animation is paused.
What is the Discord sticker size?
Discord stickers are 320x320 pixels and capped at 512KB. They accept PNG (static), APNG (animated), or Lottie JSON (vector), but not standard GIF — animated GIFs have to be converted to APNG before upload. Servers start with 5 sticker slots and unlock more at each boost level (15 at Level 1, 30 at Level 2, 60 at Level 3).
What is the Discord server banner size?
The Discord server banner uses a 16:9 aspect ratio with a recommended minimum of 960x540 pixels. Uploading at 1920x1080 keeps it sharp on larger displays. Server banners require the server to reach Boost Level 2, and an animated GIF banner requires Boost Level 3.
What is the Discord invite splash size?
The Discord invite splash — the background behind the invite card — is 1920x1080 pixels (16:9) and unlocks at Boost Level 1. It is static only, and the invite card sits centered and opaque on top of it, so keep logos and text away from the middle of the frame.
What is the Discord profile banner size?
Discord profile banners are 600x240 pixels (5:2 aspect ratio) and require Nitro. Nitro members can upload an animated GIF banner up to 10MB. Your avatar overlaps the bottom-left of the banner, so place text and logos toward the upper-right.
How many emoji and stickers can a Discord server have?
A non-boosted server gets 50 static emoji + 50 animated emoji slots and 5 sticker slots. Boost Level 1 doubles emoji to 100 + 100 and raises stickers to 15. Boost Level 2 raises emoji to 150 + 150 and stickers to 30. Boost Level 3 raises emoji to 250 + 250 and stickers to 60.
