Amazon Product Image Size Requirements

Your Amazon main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) with the product filling at least 85% of the frame. Zoom switches on once the longest side hits 1000 pixels — but Amazon recommends 1600 pixels or larger, and a square 2000 x 2000 is the safe upload. JPEG is the preferred format, 10MB max.

The 85% Frame-Fill Rule

Amazon requires the product to occupy at least 85% of the main image frame. This is the rule sellers most often miss — the photo is technically compliant, the background is white, and the product still sits marooned in the middle.

Fills the frame

Product spans ~85%+ of the image

Too much white space

Product reads tiny in search results

Crop tight, but never let the product touch or run off the edge of the frame — Amazon requires the whole item to be visible. A few pixels of white margin on every side is the target. Search thumbnails render this image at a fraction of its size, so the tighter crop is what makes your listing readable in a grid of competitors.

Download a Blank Template

Each template downloads as a PNG at the exact dimensions on a pure white canvas — the same RGB 255, 255, 255 Amazon requires for main images. Drop your cutout on top and export as JPEG.

Main Image Requirements

The main image is the one Amazon shows in search results, and it is held to far stricter rules than the rest of your gallery. Break one and Amazon can suppress the listing until you replace the photo.

  • Pure white background: RGB 255, 255, 255 exactly. Pure white blends into Amazon’s search and detail pages; an off-white or lightly shadowed backdrop reads as gray against them.
  • 85% frame fill: the product must occupy at least 85% of the image, showing the entire item without touching or being cut off by the frame edge.
  • Photograph, not illustration: main images must be real photos of the actual product. Drawings, renders, and mockups are not allowed outside categories like books and media.
  • Nothing but the product: no text, logos, watermarks, borders, inset images, badges, or decorative props. Accessories that don’t come in the box can’t appear either.
  • 1000px on the longest side turns on zoom: below that, shoppers cannot magnify the image. Upload larger — 1600px or more — for a sharp zoom.

Zoom: 1000px Works, 1600px Is Better

There are three separate numbers here and they get conflated constantly. Amazon accepts an image at 500 pixels on the longest side. Zoom activates at 1000 pixels. And Amazon recommends 1600 pixels or larger because zoom at exactly 1000px magnifies a small file and looks soft.

  • 500px longest side: the floor. Anything smaller is rejected on upload.
  • 1000px longest side: zoom becomes available. This is a minimum, not a target.
  • 1600px+ longest side: Amazon’s recommendation for a clean zoom experience.
  • 2000 x 2000 square: a practical default — comfortably over the recommendation, square so it crops predictably, and small enough to stay well under the 10MB file cap.
  • 10000px longest side: the ceiling. There is no benefit to approaching it; you will hit the 10MB limit first.

Secondary & Lifestyle Images

Slots 2 through 9 drop nearly every main-image restriction. This is where lifestyle photos, infographics, scale comparisons, and feature callouts belong.

  • Up to 9 images per listing: most listings display the first 7 on desktop, and fewer when a video occupies a slot. Front-load the images that sell.
  • Any background: shoot in a room, outdoors, on a model — the pure white rule applies to the main image only.
  • Text and graphics are allowed: annotate dimensions, call out materials, overlay a size chart. Keep type large; these render small on phones.
  • Match the main image resolution: secondary images zoom too. Stay at 1600px or larger on the longest side so a shopper inspecting the stitching sees stitching.
  • Square keeps the gallery consistent: mixing aspect ratios makes the thumbnail strip jump as shoppers click through.

Swatch Images for Variations

Swatches are the small color or material chips shoppers click to switch between child ASINs in a variation family. They are the smallest asset on this page by an order of magnitude.

  • 30 pixels on the longest side, maximum: swatches render as tiny chips. Square is the convention.
  • 72 PPI, JPEG: the preferred resolution and format for swatch uploads.
  • Name it with the view indicator: the convention is SKU + .swatch + extension — for example 15774.swatch.jpg.
  • Show the material, not the product: at 30 pixels a photo of the whole item is unreadable mush. Crop into the fabric, the finish, the color itself.
  • One swatch per child ASIN: each variation in a color or style theme gets its own chip.

Product Video & Thumbnail

Listing videos sit in the image gallery and take a slot from your still images. Amazon generates a thumbnail automatically, but you can replace it — and you should, because the auto-pick is a random frame.

  • 1280 x 720 minimum: below 720p Amazon rejects the upload. 1920 x 1080 is the recommended target.
  • 16:9 aspect ratio: keeps the video from letterboxing or cropping across desktop, tablet, and phone.
  • Upload a custom thumbnail: match the video’s 16:9 frame at 1280 x 720 or larger, and pick a frame that shows the product clearly rather than a title card.
  • The thumbnail is not the main image: it lives in the gallery strip and doesn’t need a white background or 85% fill — but it does need to be legible at thumbnail scale.

File Format & Technical Specs

  • Accepted formats: JPEG (.jpg / .jpeg), TIFF (.tif), PNG (.png), and GIF (.gif). Animated GIFs are not supported.
  • JPEG is preferred: it is the format Amazon recommends and the one that keeps a 2000 x 2000 photograph comfortably under the size cap.
  • 10MB maximum file size: larger files are rejected. A quality-80 JPEG at 2000 x 2000 lands nowhere near this.
  • sRGB color profile: the web standard, and what Amazon renders against. CMYK is accepted but can shift color unpredictably on screen — convert before you export.
  • No transparency in main images: a transparent PNG flattens against Amazon’s background, which is white anyway. Export the white in rather than relying on it.

Selling the same catalog elsewhere? Etsy’s specs differ in almost every respect — no white-background rule, a 4:3 display ratio, and 2000px on the shortest side. See our Etsy listing image size guide for the full comparison, or resize an image to Amazon’s dimensions right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should Amazon product images be?

Amazon accepts images from 500 pixels on the longest side, but zoom only activates at 1000 pixels. Amazon recommends 1600 pixels or larger on the longest side, and a square 2000 x 2000 JPEG is the practical default — over the recommendation, predictable to crop, and well under the 10MB file limit.

What are Amazon’s main image requirements?

The main image must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), show the entire product filling at least 85% of the frame without touching the edges, and be a real photograph of the product. No text, logos, watermarks, borders, inset images, or props are allowed. Listings can be suppressed until a compliant main image is uploaded.

Do Amazon images need to be 1000x1000 for zoom?

Zoom requires 1000 pixels on the longest side, so a 1000 x 1000 square qualifies — the image does not have to be square, it just has to clear 1000 pixels on its long edge. Amazon recommends going to 1600 pixels or larger, because zooming into a file that only just meets the threshold looks soft.

What size is an Amazon swatch image?

Swatch images are a maximum of 30 pixels on the longest side at 72 PPI, saved as JPEG. Name the file with the SKU plus the swatch view indicator, such as 15774.swatch.jpg. At that size, crop into the color or material itself rather than photographing the whole product.

Can Amazon lifestyle images have a background?

Yes. Only the main image requires a pure white background. Secondary images in slots 2 through 9 can use any background and may include text, graphics, infographics, models, and props. Keep them at 1600 pixels or larger on the longest side, since secondary images support zoom too.

What file format does Amazon accept for product images?

Amazon accepts JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and non-animated GIF. JPEG is the preferred format. Files must be under 10MB and no more than 10,000 pixels on the longest side. Save in the sRGB color profile; CMYK is accepted but can shift color on screen.

How many images can an Amazon listing have?

You can upload up to 9 images per listing, though most listings display only the first 7 on desktop — and fewer when a video takes a gallery slot. Put your strongest images first, since the ones past the visible cutoff need a click to reach.
