Tumblr Image Sizes — Photo Post, GIF, Header & Avatar

Tumblr recommends photo posts at 540x810 and serves a full-size version up to 2048x3072. Headers are 2048x1152, avatars are 128x128, and GIFs should stay under 3MBto avoid compression entirely. Every figure below comes from Tumblr’s own help centre — see the note on the 3000x1055 header myth further down.

Photo Posts

Tumblr states two numbers, and they are the same shape. It recommends 540 pixels wide by 810 tall so images are not scaled down on the dashboard, and it serves a full-size version of up to 2048 pixels wide and 3072 pixels tall when someone clicks through. Both are 2:3 — so one 2:3 master covers both the dashboard render and the click-through.

  • Design at 2048x3072, let Tumblr derive the rest: upload the full-size 2:3 master. Tumblr generates the 540px dashboard render from it, so you get a sharp click-through for free.
  • 540px is the column, not the limit: the dashboard column is what almost everyone sees. Anything that has to be legible — captions inside the image, thin type, chart labels — must survive being rendered at 540 wide.
  • 2:3 is portrait: Tumblr’s dashboard is a single vertical column, so tall images occupy more of the screen than wide ones. A landscape photo is not wrong, it just wins less real estate.
  • 20MB per static image: the ceiling for JPEG, PNG, and WEBP. It is generous enough that it never binds in practice — dimensions bind first.
  • 10 images from the apps, 30 from the web: the per-post cap depends on where you post from, which is worth knowing before you build a 20-image photoset on your phone.

GIFs

Tumblr is the platform GIFs were built for, and it is the one spec people get wrong most often — because the number everyone quotes (10MB) is the ceiling, not the target. There are three thresholds, and the one that matters sits at 5MB: if Tumblr cannot serve a GIF above it, it shows only the first frame. Your animation silently becomes a still.

Tumblr’s GIF Budget, to Scale

Under 3MB
3–5MB
5–10MB
0MB3MB5MB10MB
  • Under 3MB: Served untouched — no compression
  • 3–5MB: Compressed, still animates
  • 5–10MB: Best-effort compression — may fall back to first frame only

Tumblr converts every uploaded GIF to the GIFV format. Staying under 3MB is the only way to guarantee your file is served exactly as you exported it.

  • 540 pixels wide, maximum: Tumblr recommends GIFs be no more than 540 wide — the dashboard column width. A wider GIF is a bigger file for no visible gain.
  • Under 3MB is the real target: below it, Tumblr leaves your file alone. Above it, you are trusting Tumblr’s compressor with your dithering and colour palette.
  • The 5MB cliff: a GIF over 5MB that Tumblr cannot successfully compress is served as its first frame only. This is the failure everyone has seen and nobody can explain.
  • Pre-compress before you upload: if you are handing Tumblr a compressed GIF, keep it under 5MB. Cut frames, drop the frame rate, or reduce the palette — all three beat letting the compressor guess.
  • Everything becomes GIFV: Tumblr transcodes uploads regardless. The GIF you upload is a source file, not the file that gets served.

Header Image

Tumblr publishes an ideal header of 2048x1152 pixels — a clean 16:9 — at up to 10MB, in JPEG, PNG, WEBP, or GIF.

About that 3000x1055 header size

A great many size guides list the Tumblr header as 3000x1055. Tumblr does not publish that number anywhere. It traces back to a long-running unofficialTumblr blog — one that states plainly that its author is not Tumblr staff — and it describes the pixel dimensions of the stock default header images Tumblr shipped, not a recommended upload size. Nor is it 16:9. Tumblr’s own help centre gives the ideal header as 2048x1152, and that is the number this page uses.

  • 2048x1152, 16:9: the ideal size Tumblr states. Any 16:9 image scales to it cleanly.
  • Centre what matters: the header crops differently across themes, desktop, and mobile. Keep logos and text away from the edges, and expect the avatar to sit on top of it.
  • GIFs are allowed here: the header is the one profile asset that accepts an animated GIF. Avatars do not.
  • 10MB ceiling: the same limit as the avatar, and a fifth of what a photo post allows.

Avatar

The blog avatar — Tumblr calls it the blog icon — has an ideal size of 128x128 pixels, up to 10MB, in JPEG, PNG, or WEBP.

  • 128x128, square: the size Tumblr states outright. Upload a square or Tumblr crops one for you.
  • No animated avatars: the accepted formats are JPEG, PNG, and WEBP. GIF is not among them — that is the header’s privilege.
  • It renders small, and it renders everywhere: the avatar sits beside every post you make and reblog. At 128 pixels a wordmark is unreadable; a single high-contrast shape is not.
  • Round or square depends on the theme: keep anything load-bearing away from the corners so it survives a circular mask.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best image size for Tumblr posts?

Tumblr recommends 540 pixels wide by 810 tall so your image is not scaled down on the dashboard, and serves a full-size version of up to 2048 pixels wide by 3072 tall when someone clicks through. Both are a 2:3 ratio, so design a single 2:3 master at 2048x3072 and let Tumblr derive the 540px dashboard render from it. Static images can be JPEG, PNG, or WEBP, up to 20MB.

What is the Tumblr GIF size limit?

Keep GIF files to 10MB or less, but treat that as the ceiling rather than the target. GIFs under 3MB are not compressed at all. A pre-compressed GIF should be no larger than 5MB. Between 5MB and 10MB Tumblr will attempt to compress the file for you, and if it cannot serve the result it displays only the first frame. Tumblr also recommends GIFs be no more than 540 pixels wide.

Why does my Tumblr GIF only show the first frame?

Because it is too large. When Tumblr cannot successfully serve a GIF that exceeds 5MB, it serves only the first frame — the post looks like a still image rather than a broken one, which is why the cause is rarely obvious. Re-export under 3MB to bypass compression entirely, by cutting frames, lowering the frame rate, or reducing the colour palette.

What size is a Tumblr header image?

Tumblr gives the ideal header image as 2048x1152 pixels — a 16:9 aspect ratio — no larger than 10MB, in JPEG, PNG, WEBP, or GIF format. The header is the only profile asset that accepts an animated GIF. Because it crops differently across themes and devices, keep logos and text centred and away from the edges.

Is the Tumblr header size 3000x1055?

No. Tumblr does not publish that dimension anywhere. The figure originates from an unofficial Tumblr blog whose author states they are not Tumblr staff, and it describes the pixel size of Tumblr’s stock default header images rather than a recommended upload size. Tumblr’s help centre gives the ideal header as 2048x1152 pixels at a 16:9 ratio.

What size is a Tumblr avatar?

The ideal Tumblr avatar, which Tumblr calls the blog icon, is 128x128 pixels and no larger than 10MB. Accepted formats are JPEG, PNG, and WEBP — animated GIFs are not supported for avatars, only for headers. Because the avatar appears beside every post and reblog at a small size, use a single high-contrast shape rather than a wordmark.

Are Tumblr image sizes the same as Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest?

No, and the ratio is what differs. Tumblr’s photo posts are 2:3 portrait, the same ratio as Pinterest’s 1000x1500 standard pin — so a pin drops into a Tumblr post with no cropping at all. Instagram’s tallest feed post is 4:5 and Twitter/X favours 16:9 landscape, so neither transfers without cropping. Tumblr avatars are 128x128, far smaller than Instagram’s 320x320 profile photo.
