Google Business Profile Image Sizes — Logo, Cover Photo & Posts
Google publishes one image spec for a Business Profile, and it covers your logo, cover photo, posts and product shots alike: JPG or PNG, between 10KB and 5MB, 720x720 recommended and 250x250 minimum. Upload a square 720x720 and you have satisfied every published requirement. Everything below is sourced from Google’s own help centre and Business Profile API.
Google Business Profile Image Sizes at a Glance
| Asset | Dimensions | Ratio | Formats | File Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Any photo (recommended) | 720 x 720 | 1:1 | JPG, PNG | 10KB – 5MB |
| Any photo (minimum) | 250 x 250 | 1:1 | JPG, PNG | 10KB – 5MB |
| LogoSquare | 720 x 720 * | 1:1 | JPG, PNG | 10KB – 5MB |
| Cover photo | Not published † | Not published | JPG, PNG | 10KB – 5MB |
| Post photo | 720 x 720 | 1:1 | JPG, PNG | 10KB – 5MB |
| Product photo | 720 x 720 | 1:1 | JPG, PNG | 10KB – 5MB |
* Google does not publish a logo-specific dimension. The logo is square, and the general photo spec applies to it — so 720x720 is the recommended resolution and 250x250 is the floor.
† Google does not publish a cover photo dimension or aspect ratio anywhere in its help centre or API. The widely-repeated 1080x608 and 1024x576 figures do not appear in any Google document.

Start on a correctly-sized canvas instead of guessing in your editor. The square templates match Google’s recommended 720x720 resolution; the cover template is a large 16:9 landscape, since Google publishes no cover dimension of its own.

The 250px Floor — and the Two Categories It Skips
Google’s help centre gives one photo spec. The Business Profile API gives the rule that spec is enforced by, and it is more specific: with the exception of PROFILE and COVER category, all photos must measure a minimum of 250px on the short edge, with a file size of at least 10240 bytes. That 10240 bytes is the same 10KB floor the help centre quotes.

Two things fall out of this. First, the 250x250 figure everyone publishes as “the Google Business Profile logo size” is the floor that applies to logos — it is the smallest file Google will accept, not a target. Uploading a 250x250 logo is uploading the worst logo Google permits. Second, the two categories people write the most confident dimensions for — the cover photo and the profile photo — are precisely the two Google exempts from its own minimum.
Logo
The logo is square and it is subject to the general photo spec: JPG or PNG, 10KB to 5MB, 250x250 minimum, 720x720 recommended. Google does not publish a separate logo dimension, so the recommended resolution is the number to aim at.
- Upload 720x720: Google’s recommended resolution, square, comfortably above the 250px floor, and enough headroom for high-DPI rendering.
- Do not upload 250x250: it is the documented minimum, not a recommendation. It clears the floor by exactly nothing and looks soft everywhere it renders.
- Ship the mark, not the wordmark: the logo renders small and square beside your business name. An icon-only lockup survives; a wordmark with a tagline does not.
- Watch the 10KB floor: this is the one that catches logos specifically. A flat, two-colour logo saved as a 720x720 PNG can compress to well under 10240 bytes and be rejected for being too small a file. Export as PNG-24 rather than a reduced palette if you hit it.
- PNG for flat marks, JPG for photographs: Google accepts both, and only these two.
Cover Photo
This is where the internet is most confident and Google is most silent. There is no published cover photo dimension, no published aspect ratio, and the API explicitly exempts the COVER category from the 250px short-edge floor. The only spec that provably applies is the general one: JPG or PNG, 10KB to 5MB.
- Upload a large landscape image: a 1920x1080 16:9 photo clears every published limit and gives Google plenty of pixels to crop from. The template above is exactly that.
- Centre the subject: Google renders your profile across search, Maps, desktop and mobile, and the crop is not the same in each. Anything you care about belongs away from the edges.
- Setting a cover photo is a preference, not a guarantee. Google says plainly that in some instances, this action doesn’t guarantee the cover photo will show up as the first image for your business. A better-quality photo — including one a customer uploaded — can be shown instead.
- That makes quality the real lever: since you cannot force the placement, the way to win it is to upload the sharpest, best-lit candidate in the set. See the quality rules below.
- Ignore 1080x608: it appears in dozens of guides and in zero Google documents. So does 1024x576. Neither is wrong to upload — both are perfectly good 16:9 landscapes — but neither is a requirement, and neither is worth downscaling a better photo to hit.
Post & Product Photos
Posts and products draw on the same published spec as everything else. Product photos fall under the PRODUCT media category, so unlike the cover photo they are bound by the 250px short-edge floor and the 10KB minimum file size.
- 720x720 square is the safe default: Google’s recommended resolution, and square survives every crop the profile applies.
- The 250px floor is enforced here: a product shot with a short edge under 250px is rejected outright. A cover photo with the same dimensions is not.
- One product, filling the frame: post and product thumbnails render small in the profile carousel. A single subject shot tight beats a styled scene.
- 5MB is the ceiling for everything: it applies to posts, products, logos and covers equally. A 5MB JPEG is a very large photograph — if you are near it, you are probably uploading an unedited camera original.
- Reuse the square master: the same 720x720 you built for the logo grid works for products. If you already produce a 1:1 master for LinkedIn, it drops straight in here.
Photo Quality Tips
Google publishes a quality rule alongside the dimensions, and it is worth reading literally: the photo should be in focus and well lit, and have no significant alterations or excessive use of filters. Because Google decides which photo leads your profile, this rule has more practical effect on what visitors see than any pixel dimension on this page.
- In focus, well lit: the two things Google names first. A sharp phone photo taken near a window beats a soft photo from a better camera.
- No heavy filters or alterations: Google asks for photos that represent the business as it actually looks. A heavily graded, high-contrast edit reads as a stock image and is a candidate for being passed over.
- Do not upscale to hit a number: a 250x250 original stretched to 720x720 is a soft 720x720. The floor exists to stop this; clearing it artificially defeats the point.
- Do not downscale a good photo either: 720x720 is a recommendation, not a maximum. The only hard ceiling is 5MB.
- Compress carefully: the 10KB minimum means aggressive compression can fail an upload outright. If a file is rejected as too small, save at a higher quality rather than resizing.
- Upload more than the minimum set: since Google chooses the lead image from what is available, giving it several strong, well-lit candidates is the only real influence you have over the one it picks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size image should I use for Google Business Profile?
Google publishes a single photo spec that covers every image on a Business Profile: JPG or PNG format, a file size between 10 KB and 5 MB, a recommended resolution of 720 px tall by 720 px wide, and a minimum resolution of 250 px tall by 250 px wide. A square 720x720 JPG or PNG satisfies every published requirement for logos, posts and product photos alike.
What size should a Google Business Profile logo be?
Upload a square logo at 720x720 pixels, Google’s recommended resolution. Google does not publish a logo-specific dimension, so the general photo spec applies. The 250x250 figure often quoted as the logo size is actually the minimum Google accepts — the Business Profile API enforces a 250px short-edge floor on the LOGO category — so treating it as a target means uploading the smallest logo Google permits.
What size is a Google Business Profile cover photo?
Google does not publish a cover photo dimension or aspect ratio. The Business Profile API explicitly exempts the COVER category from the 250px short-edge minimum that applies to other photos, and the help centre gives only the general spec of JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB. Upload a large 16:9 landscape image such as 1920x1080 and keep the subject centred, because the crop differs across search, Maps, desktop and mobile. The commonly cited 1080x608 and 1024x576 sizes do not appear in any Google document.
Why doesn’t my cover photo show up first?
Because setting a cover photo is a preference rather than a guarantee. Google states that in some instances this action doesn’t guarantee the cover photo will show up as the first image for your business. Google selects the image it judges most representative, which can be a photo uploaded by a customer. Uploading sharper, better-lit photos is the only meaningful influence you have over the choice.
What file formats and file sizes does Google Business Profile accept?
JPG or PNG only, with a file size between 10 KB and 5 MB. The 10 KB minimum is a real constraint rather than a formality: the API expresses it as 10240 bytes, and a flat two-colour logo exported as a compact PNG can fall below it and be rejected for being too small a file.
What size should Google Business Profile post and product images be?
Both follow the same published spec: JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, 720x720 recommended and 250x250 minimum. Product photos fall under the PRODUCT media category, so unlike cover photos they are bound by the 250px short-edge floor. A square 720x720 image is the safe default for both.
Does Google Business Profile have quality requirements as well as size ones?
Yes. Google asks that the photo be in focus and well lit, and have no significant alterations or excessive use of filters. Because Google chooses which photo leads your profile, meeting the quality rule affects what visitors actually see more than hitting any particular pixel dimension.
Can I reuse my LinkedIn or Facebook images on Google Business Profile?
The square assets, yes. A 720x720 or larger square logo works on Google Business Profile and drops into LinkedIn’s company logo slot without a rebuild. Cover photos do not transfer: a Facebook cover is a wide, precisely-specified banner with a documented safe zone, whereas Google publishes no cover dimensions at all and re-crops the image per surface. Build the Google cover as a centred landscape photograph rather than a designed banner with text near the edges.
